The annoying part is this: you can do everything right and still lose to the blade. Paper shifts. Cutters drift. Home printers scale things when you’re not looking. And tiny borders amplify tiny mistakes.
So in this MTG card size guide, I’m going to give you the exact numbers (2.5 x 3.5, bleed, safe zone), what they mean in real life, and how to set up a bleed template so you can cut cards without the dreaded white edges.
MTG card size: what “2.5 x 3.5” really means
The “traditional” MTG card size is approximately 2.5 inches × 3.5 inches. That’s the size your card should be after trimming.
But you’ll also see 63 × 88 mm (and sometimes 63.5 × 88.9 mm). Here’s what’s going on:
- 2.5 × 3.5 inches is the common “standard/poker” card size people design around.
- 63.5 × 88.9 mm is the exact inch-to-mm conversion.
- 63 × 88 mm is the rounded metric listing you’ll see on sleeves and some card templates.
In practice, all of these are trying to point you to the same category: standard trading card size. The key is to pick one workflow and stick to it.
My recommendation for design files:
Use 2.5 × 3.5 inches as your trim size, then build your bleed and safe zone around that. It matches how most print templates are explained and keeps the math simple.
The three lines that matter: trim, bleed, and safe zone
When people mess up MTG proxy sizing, it’s usually because they only think about the final card size. But print files have three zones:
1) Trim size (final cut)
This is the finished card in your deck.
- Trim: 2.5″ × 3.5″
- Metric: ~63.5 mm × 88.9 mm (or commonly rounded to 63 × 88 mm)
2) Bleed (extra art past the cut)
Bleed is the “safety buffer” of background art that extends beyond the trim line. It exists because cuts aren’t perfectly centered every time.
- Standard bleed: 1/8″ (0.125″) on each side
- File size with bleed: 2.75″ × 3.75″
If your background doesn’t extend into the bleed area, you get white edges the moment the cut drifts even a hair.
3) Safe zone (keep important content away from edges)
The safe zone is where your text and key icons should live. You’re giving the cutter room to be imperfect without chopping off your mana symbols, name, or rules text.
- Common safe margin: 1/8″ (0.125″) inside the trim line
That means your “safe content” box is roughly:
- Safe zone: 2.25″ × 3.25″ (if you pull in 0.125″ from all sides)
Not every printer uses the exact same safe zone, but 1/8″ is a solid baseline. If you’re doing a tight border frame, go even safer.
Bleed template numbers: inches, mm, and pixels (so you can stop guessing)
Here’s the cheat sheet you actually want.
Print-ready sizes (most common)
- Trim size: 2.5″ × 3.5″
- Bleed size: 2.75″ × 3.75″ (adds 0.125″ on each edge)
- Safe margin: keep important elements at least 0.125″ inside the trim
Pixel sizes at 300 DPI (a common baseline)
If you’re designing raster art (or exporting PNGs), DPI matters. At 300 DPI:
- Trim (2.5″ × 3.5″) → 750 × 1050 px
- With bleed (2.75″ × 3.75″) → 825 × 1125 px
- Safe zone (2.25″ × 3.25″) → 675 × 975 px (guide box, not file size)
Pixel sizes at 600 DPI (nice for extra crisp text)
- Trim → 1500 × 2100 px
- With bleed → 1650 × 2250 px
You don’t have to work at 600 DPI, but it can make small text and thin lines look cleaner when downsampled.
If you’re using 63 × 88 mm instead
Some templates and sleeve specs use 63 × 88 mm.
At 300 DPI, that’s roughly:
- 63 mm (~2.48″) → ~744 px wide
- 88 mm (~3.46″) → ~1039 px tall
This is one reason you’ll see slightly different “official” pixel sizes floating around online. The important thing is consistency: your file, your template, and your cut all need to match.
Why white edges happen (even when your printer is “accurate”)
White edges come from one of these four problems:
1) No bleed (or not enough bleed)
If your background stops at the trim line, a tiny cut drift exposes paper. That’s what bleed is for.
2) Borders placed too close to the edge
Thin frames are brutal. A 1–2 px border near the edge will look uneven even if the cut is only off by a fraction.
If you want a border, you have two good options:
- Make it thick and keep it well inside the trim (so drift is less noticeable)
- Or go full-bleed and avoid borders that demand perfection
3) Your printer scaled the page
This is the silent killer.
If your print dialog says:
- “Fit to page”
- “Scale to printable area”
- “Shrink oversized pages”
…then your 2.75″ × 3.75″ design is no longer 2.75″ × 3.75″.
You want 100% / Actual Size. Always.
4) Your cut method introduced drift
Scissors drift. Paper slips. Stacks creep.
Even a decent trimmer can drift if you don’t have a repeatable alignment method (more on that next).
Cutting without white edges: a real-life trimming workflow that works
You don’t need industrial gear. You just need a process that respects how paper moves.
Step 1: print a sheet with bleed and crop marks
Crop marks are your “cut here” indicators. They also give you a reference to check if anything scaled wrong.
If your crop marks measure wrong with a ruler, stop. Fix scaling first.
Step 2: cut outside → then cut to final
If you’re cutting a sheet of cards, don’t try to nail the final trim on the first pass.
A better approach:
- Rough cut strips (horizontal or vertical) to isolate rows/columns
- Then final cut each card to trim using the crop marks
This reduces “stack creep” where the paper shifts as you cut.
Step 3: don’t stack too thick
It’s tempting to cut 10 sheets at once. That’s also how you get tapered edges.
For home setups, thinner stacks cut cleaner and more consistently.
Step 4: if you use borders, cut one “test card” first
Before you commit to a full sheet, cut one card and check:
- Are borders even?
- Any white slivers?
- Did the art extend far enough into bleed?
Make adjustments, then run the full sheet.
Corner radius: the detail that makes cards feel “real”
Sharp corners don’t just look wrong. They catch sleeves and make shuffling feel bad.
A common corner radius for playing cards is about 3 mm (roughly 1/8″).
The easiest fix is a corner rounder punch that matches that radius. If you’re trying to cut rounded corners with scissors, you’re signing up for pain.
Quick checklist: print-ready MTG card file (no drama)
Use this as your pre-print sanity check:
- ✅ Document size is 2.75″ × 3.75″ (includes bleed)
- ✅ Trim line is marked at 2.5″ × 3.5″
- ✅ Background art extends fully into bleed
- ✅ Text/icons stay inside the safe zone (at least 0.125″ in)
- ✅ Export is high quality (PDF or PNG, no extra compression)
- ✅ Print is set to 100% / Actual Size (no “fit” scaling)
- ✅ You test-cut one card first
If you do just those things, you eliminate 90% of the white-edge heartbreak.
